Social position of women
What is the position of women in the Netherlands?
Women are still significantly underrepresented in politics. Economically, women have fewer opportunities than men. They are also more likely to be victims of violence. This is due to discrimination and a subordinate position compared to men.
To improve the socioeconomic position of women and increase the share of women in top positions, timing in a woman’s life is crucial. After all, the investment made in building a career coincides with their fertile period. It is important that women participate in the labor market. Education plays a significant role in expanding opportunities and possibilities.
Women in medical research
For a long time, medical research has paid little attention to women and female-specific conditions. Men were the norm in scientific research. But women have different symptoms than men, making them more likely to be misdiagnosed or not receive the right medication. Menopausal women are also more often wrongly diagnosed with burnout because doctors fail to recognize their symptoms. Can gender-sensitive medical technology, which enables better diagnosis and therapy, improve the social position of women? That is an important question.
How do the Dutch divide care and work responsibilities? How many women hold top positions? How do women view careers, part-time work, and caring for family and household?
Women work less than men, and the share of women at the top is still low compared to men. The Netherlands ranked 38th in the World Economic Forum’s annual Global Gender Gap ranking. The main reasons for this low score are women’s low political and economic participation. The Rathenau Institute previously published a fact sheet stating that only 24% of all professors are women.
